Liam Payne, former member of the boyband One Direction, has tragically died at the age of 31 after falling from a hotel window in Buenos Aires, according to local police.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at a hotel on Costa Rica Street in the Palermo district, as confirmed in a statement from the Buenos Aires police to CNN. 

Authorities responded to a 911 call from the hotel about a disruptive individual, possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol. However, the police statement did not explicitly identify the person as Payne.

Just days earlier, Payne had been seen in Argentina attending a concert by his former bandmate, Niall Horan, on October 2, with videos of the event circulating on social media. He had also recently celebrated his 31st birthday in the UK, sharing moments of the occasion on Snapchat.

Born in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, Payne was the youngest of three siblings and studied music technology at the City of Wolverhampton College. He gained worldwide fame as part of One Direction, the iconic British boyband that formed in 2010 after the members competed on the UK version of "The X Factor." Alongside Payne, the band featured Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Horan.

In a 2015 interview with *Entertainment Weekly*, Payne expressed his passion for performing and songwriting, sharing his pride in co-writing the band’s hit song "What a Feeling" with Tomlinson. "That was a big one for me and Louis," Payne said, describing it as a "driving jam" with inspiration from Fleetwood Mac.

One Direction announced a hiatus in 2015. Liam Payne later debuted as a solo artist with his 2019 album *LP1*. In May 2023, Payne revealed that he was working on a new album, expressing his excitement about the project and his plans for a tour.

Payne had been candid about his struggles with substance abuse and shared in the summer of 2023 that he had completed treatment and celebrated six months of sobriety.

The tour, which was scheduled to begin in South America in September 2023, had to be postponed due to a kidney infection Payne suffered.

In March 2023, Payne released the song "Teardrops."

Payne had a son, born in 2017, with Cheryl Cole, a former member of the pop group Girls Aloud.

In a 2023 YouTube video, Payne spoke warmly about his son, Bear. "He’s awesome. He’s growing up far too quickly," Payne said. "He’s far smarter than I’ll ever be. He’s a wonder."
